In 1878, the famous Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson crossed the Cévennes in the company of the donkey Modestine. His travel diary gave rise to this now famous narrative, in which thoughts about the country, its people and history are mixed with travel writing. Sometimes touching, then again ironic and full of humour, melancholic or also deeply realistic, Stevenson sings the song of the land in strong and gripping tones, occasionally an elegiac note of longing for the distant beloved creeps in.
In addition to extensive notes, the volume contains the essay "Walking Tours" and the fragment "A Mountain Town in France". The latter was originally intended by Stevenson as an introduction to the Travels with a Donkey.
The book is completed by an extensive annotation section, which helps the reader to understand the historical and literary context of the story.
